The Temple On Magdalen Road

Did you know that Oxford’s Tibetan Buddhist Centre is just a stone’s throw away from our new premises on Magdalen Road? Over on the other side of the street, tucked just back from the road, is beautiful Thrangu House. Thrangu has its own resident Tibetan monk, and it has done since 1981. You may well have noticed a smiling face in red robes waving to passers-by on Magdalen Road over the years… Next year will mark the 40th anniversary of the founding of centre. We see a celebration in our joint futures!

Tibetan people love to party, and this week His Holiness XIV Dalai Lama celebrated his 85th birthday, an occasion that was marked by Tibetan communities across the world. Here in Oxford the day started with a socially-distant puja, or ceremonial offering, over at Thrangu House. There were prayers and there was Yeshi’s delicious chocolate cake… (see the photo – far right).

Later in the day Oxford’s Tibetan community came together fireside to play music and to eat – of course. These are all essential elements of a good Tibetan party, and this one continued, as they tend to do, well into the wee small hours.

Chef Yeshi is still recovering, but we’re hoping he’ll be good to go for another Thursday night at Silvie. This time we’ll be bringing a curry menu too, as the weather isn’t quite playing ball for the time of year. But our cold noodles will also be back, and we’ll have momo packs big and small for you to take home or enjoy in Silvie’s beautiful gardens.

We are running our pop up at Silvie every Thursday and Friday throughout July, 5pm – 8.30pm. Do follow our social media for more details. Please note that we are not taking pre-orders for this, but our queue moves fast. Many thanks to everyone who came out and queued so responsibly – in the rain! – last week. We were really happy with the set up and we thank you for your support and cooperation.

For those of you who can’t make it to Silvie, or who prefer us to come to you, home delivery continues as usual every Saturday for the foreseeable future. Please click here to order.
