The Handsome Horsemen Of Tibet

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZEZ2uczpRM

Wintertime in eastern Tibet.

Many of you enjoyed the last video we shared from home. This one arguably gives you even more of a taste of the paradise that is snow and horsemen on the Tibetan plateau. In this short clip even the nomads appear to be temporarily paralysed by the beauty of scene (spot the guy with his mobile phone out – he’s making his own video).

You’ve got everything here: mountains, snow, motorbikes and a whole herd of handsome Khampa horsemen. This part of Tibet, known by Tibetan people as Kham, is more than twice the size of Sweden, and the people are big too – considerably taller than Tibetans from other parts of Tibet.

Khampa men, as you can see in the video, often wear their hair long with red tassels, or “hero knots” woven in. Most wear long knives at their waists. Many wear earrings. Notice also their fabulous chuba, the traditional fur-lined coats worn by Tibetans throughout the region. That’s how you keep warm on the plateau.

The Khampas are known as Tibet’s cowboys – it’s easy to see why. Maybe if it snows this week Yeshi will get his chuba out for our Wednesday market. Come and see for yourselves! Weather permitting, we’ll be in Oxford’s Gloucester Green market 9am-4pm. We are also at Silvie every Thursday night – come and dine in, or takeaway for a night by the fire.
